He is a director of Commoditia, an advisory business based in Singapore focussed on supporting investors in, and traders and processors of South East Asian commodities.

Previously, as a Vice President of Invenio, part of Olam International, Mr Bentley led the research for a macro commodity fund trading agricultural commodity futures using fundamental models. Before this, and as a Director of LMC International, Mr Bentley led for many years a team advising multinational agribusinesses, energy and chemical companies, as well as governments, on all aspects of carbohydrate and protein markets. Through many different assignments he has developed a deep understanding of the fundamental structural factors underpinning agricultural commodity prices, costs, trade and production, which he uses to help clients position themselves in the face of changing market conditions.

Mr Bentley is a graduate of Trinity College, Oxford University and the London School of Economics.

Dr Jonathan Newby is an agricultural and rural development economist with over 10 years' experience working in Southeast Asia on a range agricultural development and livelihood projects. He holds an honours degree in Natural Resource Economics and a PhD in Agricultural Economics from the University of Queensland, Australia. Since 2013 he has worked for the cassava program at the International Center for Tropical Agricultural (CIAT). He currently manages several projects on developing sustainable cassava value chains in Southeast Asia with activities in Vietnam, Indonesia, Laos, Cambodia, and Myanmar. He works as part of a multidisciplinary team identifying opportunities and constraints to enhancing livelihoods of smallholder cassava farmers through strengthening the linkages between farmers, industry, governments departments and research agencies.

Hataikan currently serves as the Assistant Vice President (AVP) of Group Strategy, Sustainability, and Innovation at Thai Wah. In this role, she offers strategic guidance to propel the organization's growth and spearheads initiatives to expand sustainability within the Agri-food business.
 
With an extensive professional background spanning over 17 years, Hataikan has garnered diverse experience in various industries, including Financial Services, Technology, Retail, and Business Consulting. Prior to her tenure at Thai Wah, she held the position of Head of Strategy at Tesco. In this capacity, she helped defined strategic propositions aligned with consumer needs and market opportunities.
 
Since joining Thai Wah in 2019, Hataikan has been instrumental in piloting and scaling multiple advanced analytics and bio-agri-tech innovations across Southeast Asia. She is passionate about building sustainability throughout the entire value chain, from farm to shelf.

Even has built a career informing and advising global agribusinesses and investors, commodities interests, industry associations, and governments on China’s agricultural production, food systems, and rural development policies. She currently leads coverage of agriculture at Trivium China, where her work spans agriculture and agtech, food security, trade, and rural development issues.

 

Based in China from 2005-2023, Even has nearly two decades of first-hand experience in China’s business and regulatory context. She studied political economy and public policy at Carleton College in the US and Tsinghua University in China.

Making life better for cassava growers in Thailand

Dr Tin Maung Aye is a multi-disciplinary agronomist and soil scientist with more than 30 years of experience in global research for agriculture development, an area which he believes is crucial for global economic development. Currently, he is working with Ingredion Sweetener and Starch (Thailand) Co., Ltd as a Senior Expert on Agricultural Technology and is based in Sikhiu, Nakhon Ratchasima Province, Northeast of Thailand.

Dr Aye obtained a B.Ag degree in Agriculture from the Institute of Agriculture in Yezin, Myanmar, an MSc in Agricultural Systems at the Asian Institute of Technology (AIT) in Bangkok, Thailand, a PhD degree in Soil Science from Massey University in New Zealand, and a Post-Doctoral Research Fellow at the University of Melbourne in Australia.

Dr Aye worked at Landcare Research Ltd in New Zealand as a chemical analyst, and later worked as a research assistant at the Fertilizer and Lime Research Center at Massey University in New Zealand.  He worked with the International Center for Tropical Agriculture (CIAT) for the cassava program in Asia for more than 12 years as a Senior Scientist, and has been involved with UNDP projects in China and Cambodia as an international training expert and a team leader for cassava projects. Dr Aye has also worked with International Plant Nutrition Institute (IPNI) as a Senior Advisor of the Indochinese Peninsular for Southeast Asia Program.

Dr Aye has a broad understanding and knowledge of plant nutrition, soil management, and sustainable crop production, climate-smart agriculture including areas such as: new variety improvement, on-farm utilization, value-added product supply chain, and market making for farmers, in the SE Asia region and beyond. These works have made him aware of the life changing impact that cassava-based farming research for development can have, particularly on smallholder farming communities in Southeast Asia. 
 
Educated in Myanmar, Thailand, New Zealand and Australia, Dr Aye is drawn to the rich diversity of different cultures. He has a sound understanding of the political economy of the regions he works in, as well as their development requirements in relation to poverty alleviation, natural resource management, agriculture, food security, and environmental management.

Alex has over 30 years’ experience in international trade starting his career in Switzerland as a broker in private banking before moving to trading ores and chemical for major aluminum smelters. In 2009, started his new career in development by providing business advice to Aid supported economic reform programs, primarily supported by USAID, USDA but included, SDC, DANIDA and UNDP this trough Morocco, West Bank, Georgia, Iraq, Myanmar, and Laos.
Alex has developed and facilitated sustainable public private partnerships supporting innovation and investments. Facilitated and strengthened coordination and capacity between the public and private sector to improve production, quality, and market access of targeted commodities.
Alex has an MBA in E-Commerce and graduated from the Professional Ecole the Commerce in Lausanne Switzerland. Alex has been based in Lao PDR since 2019.

He received his Ph.D. degree in plant biotechnology from the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology Zurich (ETH Zurich), Switzerland. He has been appointed Director of Genetic Improvement Laboratory, Chinese Cassava Agricultural Research System, Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Affairs, since 2011. His research group focuses on cassava and sweet potato biotechnology to answer basic scientific questions related to the constraints of their production and to develop technologies for bridging the gap of scientific discoveries and applications, especially related to biofortification, bio-material, and bio-energy. He has conducted a dozen projects supported by international foundations and the Chinese government. He published more than 100 research papers in SCI journals including Nature Plants, Nature Biotechnology, Molecular Plant, Plant Physiology, and Plant Biotechnology Journal. He has 10 granted patents and has bred 4 new cultivars in China.

Innovative biodegradable composite foams from starch extracted from pineapple stems

For over two decades, he has actively researched the use of green materials, particularly natural materials from agricultural waste such as pineapple stem/leaf fibers, banana leaves, oil palm empty fruit bunch fibers, and coconut fibers. These materials are upcycled to create new composite materials for various industries, including food, clean energy, water purification, construction, automotive, and aviation. Kheng Lim Goh has published his findings in over 120 journal papers and has been invited as a keynote speaker and plenary speaker at several international academic and industry conferences, Prof Goh actively collaborates with international researchers from universities and research institutes in Thailand, Malaysia, Indonesia, Sri Lanka, Bangladesh, India, and China to explore new approaches for creating green composite materials from agricultural waste, focusing on pineapple and banana farms, among others.

His PhD and postdoc studies focused on cell wall formation mediated by a unique chitin synthase in Colletotrichum and the cercosporin biosynthetic pathway in Cercospora, respectively. He started his research on entomopathogenic fungi and their potential in biological control of pests and secondary metabolism at BIOTEC, Thailand. He was awarded two international research grants from the International Foundation for Science, Sweden in 2010 and 2013 for investigation of polyketide synthases in Beauveria.
